History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it was founded when Emperor Jinmu, stopping here on his journey to the east, enshrined the kami while praying for peace in the land, safety on the sea route and fortune in war. It was the foremost great shrine of Hyūga Province, but it lost all its buildings and treasures in the conflict between the Shimazu and the Ōtomo in the Tenshō era, and it was restored in Genroku 5 by Akizuki Tanemasa, lord of the Akizuki domain. The present buildings were completed on July 7, Heisei 19.
