History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun when, as Emperor Chūai and Empress Jingū were on their way to Tsukushi, a shining jewel-like stone was found on the seabed of Dōkai Bay, and Takenouchi no Sukune came ashore on the beach and enshrined this sacred stone. The sacred stone still rests as the shintai at the back of the main sanctuary, and a pine that Takenouchi no Sukune planted with his own hands is also said to be the origin of the place name "Wakamatsu".
