History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it was founded in the time of Emperor Monmu and restored in the Engi era. After its buildings were lost in war in the Tenbun era it was rebuilt, and in Keichō 15 (1610) it moved to its present site in connection with Tokugawa Ieyasu's construction of Nagoya Castle. It burned in an air raid in Shōwa 20 but was restored in Shōwa 32.
