History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi in Tenchō 6 (829), and the name Gokenzan is said to come from his burying in the mountain five swords that fell from the heavens during his practice. After losing its buildings to warfare in the Tenshō era it was rebuilt, and in the Edo period Matsudaira Yorishige, lord of the Takamatsu domain, rebuilt the main hall and installed Shō Kanjizai Bosatsu as the principal image, and it became the domain's prayer temple.
