History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, in the Ōwa era the monk Senkan Naigu invited the kami from Yodohime Jinja in Hizen as Yodo Daimyōjin; however, since the shrine's name also appears in the Engishiki, it is thought to have stood here even before that. It was originally on the riverbed on the right bank of the Katsura River, and in Meiji 35 it was moved to its present site at the Yodo Castle ruins because of work to widen the riverbed. The main sanctuary and worship hall were designated nationally Important Cultural Properties, but the main sanctuary burned down in Shōwa 50 and was rebuilt in Shōwa 55.
