History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is one of the forty-eight temples of Bizen opened by Hōon Daishi in Tenpyō Shōhō 1, and it was at first called 日待山 Nichirin-ji. In the 9th century it was renamed Hongaku-ji on the order of Jikaku Daishi Ennin, and its buildings were arranged with Senju Kanzeon Bosatsu as the principal image, but it lost its sub-temples and three-story pagoda in the Genpei conflict. In the Edo period it flourished under the protection of the Ikeda family of the Okayama domain, and six cloisters still remain today.
