History and things to know

According to Yoshimi Town's guide to its cultural properties, the Yoshimi Kannon Engi records that the temple began when Gyōki carved an image of Kanzeon Bosatsu here and placed it in a cave. It lost all its buildings in warfare in Tenbun 6 (1537), and the main hall, the three-storied pagoda and the Niō gate are said to have been rebuilt in the Edo period; all of them are designated cultural properties of the prefecture.
