History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun as a priests' lodging called Yoshimizu-in, founded by En no Gyōja in the Hakuhō era. Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Shizuka Gozen took refuge here, and in Engen 1 (1336) Emperor Go-Daigo, welcomed by Yoshimizu Sōshin Hōin, made it the imperial residence of the Southern Court. It also served as Toyotomi Hideyoshi's headquarters for his cherry-blossom viewing, and in Meiji 8 it was changed into a shrine.
