History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun in the Nara period when Gyōki carved a Jūichimen Kannon from fragrant wood found in the mountains and enshrined Amida Nyorai and Yakushi Nyorai as Yuga Daigongen. In the Muromachi period it was revived by the high priest Zōun, and in the Edo period it became a prayer temple of the Ikeda family, lords of the Bizen domain, and was crowded with pilgrims making the "ryōmairi" (visiting both) together with Konpira. It lost its worship hall in the Meiji separation of Shinto and Buddhism, but it is said that its parishioners and followers protected the principal image of the Daigongen.
