History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it was opened in the Wadō era of the Nara period as a place of practice for protecting the nation, at the request of Empress Genmei, and was revived in the Enryaku era by Dengyō Daishi Saichō. It is said that it was given the name Zensui-ji because Emperor Kanmu's illness was healed by the sacred water of this temple. The main hall was rebuilt in the Nanboku-chō period and is designated a National Treasure.
