History and things to know

According to the official guide, it began in Meitoku 4 (1393) when Yūyo Shōsō, eighth patriarch of the Jōdo school, founded it at Kaizuka in Toshima-gō, Musashi Province (around present-day Hirakawa-chō, Chiyoda). In Tenshō 18 (1590) it became the family temple of the Tokugawa, and in Keichō 3 (1598) it moved to Shiba. After much was lost in air raids, the Daiden was rebuilt in Shōwa 49 (1974).
