Section 1
I, Ananda, in this way
heard the Buddha’s teaching.
Once the Buddha was at Jetavana, Anathapindika’s park, in Shravasti,
teaching many disciples
the unsurpassably precious teaching of the Tathagata
and guiding us.
Among the disciples was the venerable Maudgalyayana, a person of exceptionally rare understanding.
Therefore we honored him as Maha Maudgalyayana.
He first attained the six extraordinary powers: first, divine vision, seeing distant places and other worlds;
second, divine hearing, perceiving even distant sounds;
third, knowledge of others’ minds;
fourth, knowledge of past lives;
fifth, freely transporting the body;
sixth, knowing that the afflictions have been exhausted.
He wished to tell his deceased parents of this joy
and repay their care in raising him.
Then,
with the extraordinary power he had newly attained,
he surveyed worlds such as hell, hungry ghosts, animals, and asuras.
To his astonishment,
his deceased mother
had been born in the hungry-ghost realm of starvation,
unable to eat, suffering as mere skin and bones.
Seeing this, Maudgalyayana grieved deeply.
Immediately he filled a bowl with rice and brought it to his mother.
When the food arrived,
she took the bowl in her left hand
and tried to eat rice with her right.
But before reaching her mouth the rice became a mass of fire, and she could not eat a single mouthful.
Maudgalyayana, deeply devoted to his parents, wept bitterly at this sight.
He immediately returned to the Buddha
and described everything from beginning to end.
The Buddha said:
‘This is because
your deceased mother’s accumulated offences in former lives
have brought suffering in the hungry-ghost realm.
The great principle by which deeds bring results cannot be changed by your strength alone.
However devoted you are, even if your voice could move heaven and earth,
heavenly and earthly deities, demons, followers of non-Buddhist paths, Daoist adepts, and the Four Heavenly Kings cannot resolve it.
Only the extraordinary strength of the whole practicing monastic community can do so.
In the world, though these are called consequences of former deeds,
many find themselves in such pitiful conditions.
I will now teach the means of rescue
to free them from every sorrow and suffering.’
Having thus introduced the matter,
the Buddha continued speaking to Maudgalyayana:
‘Perform this on the fifteenth day of the seventh month,
the monks’ day of pravarana.
Pravarana follows the ninety-day communal retreat,
when the monks gathered there
each
ask one another whether their conduct has been at fault
and reflect upon it.
On that day, for ancestors going back seven generations,
or for parents still living who, through harmful deeds in former lives,
are in difficult circumstances,
prepare abundant delicious foods and fruits such as jujubes, apricots, peaches, and plums;
utensils for washing hands, feet, and body;
incense, oil, lamps, and candles;
mats and cushions—things considered good and beautiful in this world—arranged in bowls.
Offer them to the excellent monks gathered from every direction.
On this fifteenth day of the seventh month, the monks’ day of pravarana,
among all holy practitioners,
some enter meditation in the mountains, the Buddha’s honored practice.
Some progress through the four fruits of practice:
stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, and the state beyond further learning, seeking arhatship free from afflictions.
Also,
some regulate the heart through walking meditation beneath trees.
Others freely employ the six extraordinary powers
and teach hearers and solitary awakened ones the four truths—suffering, its cause, cessation, and the path—
and the twelve links of dependent arising, the connections through which delusion and suffering arise,
guiding them.
Or
excellent beings in the ten bodhisattva stages
manifest the form of monks to guide people.
Within the community of practitioners,
all unite their hearts,
receive the offered food placed in bowls,
and are fully endowed with pure precepts.
The virtue of these holy practitioners is indeed praised as vast as the great ocean.
Therefore,
those making offerings to these monks on the day of pravarana
will see
their parents
and close relatives
released from the three painful realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals,
with food and clothing naturally provided,
and able to find peace.
If their parents are now
living in this world,
those parents will live long and happily.
Parents of the previous seven generations, even in hell or hungry-ghost realms, may be reborn in heaven’s radiant world.’
After teaching this,
the Buddha further, there and then,
solemnly addressed the many holy practitioners listening:
‘Everyone,
when receiving an offering,
first take to heart the donor’s household’s wish
and pray for it.
In Maudgalyayana’s case, for example,
for his deceased mother
and parents of the previous seven generations,
think that you are cultivating precious meditation together with them,
that through its power they may be rescued,
and pray that this may be so.
After offering such prayer,
receive the offering.
When receiving food, first offer it before the Buddha. In a stupa or temple, likewise place it before the Buddha.
Only after all the monks’ prayers have finished should you yourselves partake of the offered meal.’
When Shakyamuni finished this teaching,
the monk Maudgalyayana who had listened,
and the other disciples—described here as having awakened and entered the bodhisattva rank—all rejoiced greatly
and gratefully received the Buddha’s teaching.
Maudgalyayana’s grieving heart gradually cleared and he stopped weeping.
Through this precious working of the Buddha,
on that day,
his mother, from the long suffering of the hungry-ghost realm,
was able to emerge.
The venerable Maudgalyayana
addressed the Buddha:
‘Now my deceased mother, through the merit of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha,
assisted by the monks’ extraordinary strength,
has left the suffering of the hungry-ghost realm.
Can all the Buddha’s disciples in the future likewise,
by practicing Ullambana,
nurture good roots for their living parents and parents of the previous seven generations,
freeing them from hungry-ghost suffering?
Is this possible?’
The Buddha said:
‘Maudgalyayana,
you have asked a very good question.
I was just about to speak of that very matter.
Listen well.
Now,
male monastics,
female monastics,
kings and crown princes,
ministers,
chief ministers,
those in the high offices called the three dukes,
all officials,
and all ordinary people—
everyone wishing to cherish their parents
should, for the parents who gave them birth
and parents of the previous seven generations,
on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the day the Buddha rejoices,
the monks’ day of pravarana, arrange various delicious foods in Ullambana bowls
and offer them to the many monks. That is the method.
Then
pray that father and mother may be without illness or suffering,
maintaining a long life of a hundred years.
Also pray that parents of the previous seven generations,
if in the hungry-ghost realm,
may quickly leave it,
be reborn in human or heavenly worlds,
and live happily for a long time.
Therefore, as disciples of the Buddha,
those practicing care for parents
should, in every instant of breathing out and in,
always remember their parents
and parents of the previous seven generations,
praying that they may enter a boundlessly peaceful life.
Every year on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, with sincerity and filial compassion,
remember the parents who gave you birth,
perform Ullambana for them,
make offerings to the Buddha and monastic community,
and repay the kindness of the parents who raised and cherished you.
Therefore all who become the Buddha’s disciples
and compassionately cherish their parents in this way
should practice this Ullambana observance.’
Thus the Buddha spoke.
Then, beginning with Maudgalyayana,
the many disciples assembled
heard the Buddha’s precious Ullambana teaching, the teaching of rescue from suffering like hanging upside down,
and rejoiced greatly,
weeping tears of gratitude.
This is the story transmitting the origin of Ullambana.
Section 2
I, who have read this sutra or given a copy to others,
through the benefit of that good deed,
can nurture good roots and accomplish awakening.
May my merit reach many others as well,
helping them,
and may we together accomplish the unsurpassed Buddha’s way.

Roman letters are provided for every line of this source text.
How to use the Roman letters
Roman letters follow the kana displayed in this site’s Japanese reader; some readings are editorial additions documented on the Japanese page. These are a reading aid, not restored Sanskrit or a recording of a temple’s chanting. Historical spellings (such as wo, wi, we and ha used as a particle) are kept. Double vowels and repeated vowels mark the written kana; rhythm and pronunciation can differ by tradition.
You can simply read the meaning or sit quietly. No recitation is required. For a temple or shrine’s own recitation, follow that tradition’s published guidance.
