History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began when Jūren and Anraku built a hermitage at Shishigatani; when Matsumushi and Suzumushi, ladies-in-waiting of the Retired Emperor Go-Toba, took the tonsure, the Ken'ei Persecution followed, in which the two monks were executed. The temple relates that Hōnen Shōnin later ordered the hermitage revived and named it Jūrenzan Anraku-ji, and that its main hall was rebuilt at the present site in the Tenbun era.
