History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it was opened in Kashō 1 (848) at the wish of Empress Dowager Fujiwara no Junshi, with Eun Sōzu, a monk who had traveled to Tang China, as its founder. It had large temple complexes both on the mountain and at its foot, but lost almost all of them in the Ōnin–Bunmei War; at the beginning of the Edo period it recovered its temple grounds, and the Kannon Hall and other buildings were rebuilt.
