History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, Empress Jingū praised the three Sumiyoshi kami, who appeared in human form and helped her when she crossed the sea, as "Arahitogami" (kami appearing in human form), and she drew a waterway from the Naka River and opened rice fields. In the fighting with the Shimazu army in Tenshō 14 the shrine lost its buildings and old documents, and in the Genroku era the present sanctuary was rebuilt by the villagers.
