History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, in Daidō 1 (806) Sakanoue no Tamuramaro founded it together with the Jingū-ji when he reported his victory in battle to Suwa Daimyōjin, and Kūkai later made it a place of study for the Shingon sect. Until the Tenshō era it was responsible for the affairs of Suwa Taisha, and in the Edo period it became a temple of prayer for the Suwa Takashima domain. At the time of haibutsu kishaku (the movement to abolish Buddhism) at the Jingū-ji, the statue of Fugen Bosatsu and other images were moved to this temple.
