History and things to know
According to the Inabadō Engi, the temple's account of its origins, Tachibana no Yukihira, who had gone to Inaba Province, received a revelation in a dream while ill and obtained a statue of Yakushi Nyorai from the sea. In Chōhō 5 (1003) the statue appeared at Yukihira's residence in the capital, and the temple is said to have begun when the residence was converted into a hall named Inabadō; in Jōan 1 (1171) it was granted the name Byōdō-ji by Emperor Takakura.
