History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, based on the Kokuzō Hongi of the Sendai Kuji Hongi, it began when Chichibuhiko no Mikoto, who became the first kuni no miyatsuko of Chichibu Province in the reign of Emperor Sujin, enshrined his ancestral kami. From the medieval period onward it merged with the Myōken faith of the Chichibu Taira clan and was called Chichibu Myōken-gū, and it returned to its old name under the Meiji edicts separating kami and buddhas. The present buildings were donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in Tenshō 20 (1592) and are a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture.
