History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Jingo Keiun 4 (770) the wealthy man 練公 found a sacred log traveling up the river, and in Daidō 2 (807) Kūkai, visiting on his way to worship at Ise, carved a Jizō Bosatsu from it, which is said to be the principal image. For this reason 練公 is regarded as its founding patron and Kōbō Daishi as its founder; later it passed through the Sōtō sect, and in the Edo period it was converted to the Tendai sect.
