History and things to know
According to the official guide, it is said to have been founded in Bunmei 7 (1475) by Matsudaira Chikatada, lord of Anjō Castle, who invited Seiyo Gutei as founding priest. In Genna 1 (1615) Ieyasu established a mausoleum for eight generations of the Matsudaira, and the tahōtō pagoda, the oldest structure in the temple, was built by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu in Tenbun 4 (1535). The main hall and other buildings burned in a fire in Ansei 2 (1855) and were later rebuilt.
