History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in Taihō 1 (701) by Emperor Monmu at the wish of Fujiwara no Miyako, who would become the mother of Emperor Shōmu. The events of Anchin and Kiyohime in Enchō 6 (928) are handed down, and gave rise to the "Dōjōji pieces" of Noh and kabuki. After losing everything in the fighting of Tenshō 13 (1585), it changed to the Tendai school in Jōō 1 (1652). The present main hall was rebuilt in 1357.
