History and things to know
According to temple tradition, En no Gyōja is said to have entered Ushiroyama around the 7th century and opened the way of Shugen; when Tetsuun Hōin built Enmeisan Dōsen-ji in the Kenchō era (1249–1255), Shugendō on the mountain flourished, and in the 15th century many yamabushi came to train. It is said that in Ansei 2 (1855) the Gyōja Hondō, which serves as the Oku-no-in, was rebuilt and was crowded with worshippers.
