History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated in Kanji 7, when Minamoto no Yoshitsuna, younger brother of Minamoto no Yoshiie, who had come down to put down the rebellion of Kiyohara no Takehira, built a small shrine at Hachimanzawa in Kitamachi and prayed for victory. Afterwards it was revered by lords such as the Gamō, Date and Uesugi clans; in Meiji 19 a shrine garden was laid out at the present site on Eboshiyama, and in Meiji 23 the buildings were moved there. It became a prefectural shrine in Meiji 35, and its buildings were rebuilt in Heisei 17.
