History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, after the prince's death in the 30th year of Empress Suiko (622), Empress Suiko granted land six chō square, and monks' quarters were set up to guard the mausoleum; in Jinki 1 (724), at the request of Emperor Shōmu, a full complement of temple buildings was built. The halls and pagodas were lost in the fighting of Oda Nobunaga in Tenshō 2 (1574), but Toyotomi Hideyori rebuilt the Shōryōden in Keichō 8, and the Kondō and the Hōtō pagoda were also restored by the mid-Edo period.
