History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, Michizane-kō, on his way to Dazaifu, received warm hospitality here, presented a self-portrait and renamed the place Fukushima; it is said to have begun when the villagers, on learning of his death, built a small shrine. It lost its buildings in the great fire of Meiji 42, and the main sanctuary and worship hall were rebuilt in the Taishō era. After the war it enshrined Naka no Tenjin together with it and took its present name.
