History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it began when Princess 明子, who became a consort of Emperor Murakami, wished for a Senju Kannon temple in her home region, and Kūya Shōnin chose the port of Tomo and built a Kannon hall in 963. It was founded as a Tendai temple and later became Shingon. The guest hall Taichōrō was built in the Genroku era and was long maintained as the guest house of the Fukuyama domain.
