History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun when Ryōnin Shōnin visited this place in the time of Emperor Sutoku and told the villagers that it was a place where divine spirits dwell, and the kami were enshrined in Hōen 1 (1135) with prayers for safety at sea. In the Edo period it was called Funadama Daimyōjin, and in Meiji 12 it became a village shrine (sonsha). A legend also remains that Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his party crossed over here under the protection of Funadama Myōjin.
