History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in Eiso 1 (989) by Fujiwara no Tamemitsu to pray for the repose of his late wife and daughter. Later Emperor Go-Shirakawa, after abdicating, made this place his palace as retired emperor, and Rengeō-in (Sanjūsangendō) was built within the Hōjūji-dono palace. The principal image of Fudō Myōō is said to be the work of Jikaku Daishi.
