History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in Kenryaku 2 (1212) when Shinran Shōnin opened a hall in Yamashina, and the temple name is said to have been given by Emperor Juntoku. In Tenshō 19 (1591) it moved to its present site together with Hongan-ji, and in Meiji 9 it became independent as the head temple of its own school. After a fire in Meiji 35, the Goeidō and Amidadō were rebuilt.
