History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it was built by Gyōki in the Jinki era at the wish of Emperor Shōmu. At the Battle of Yamazaki in Tenshō 10, Hashiba Hideyoshi set up his headquarters here, and in the Kinmon Incident of Genji 1 it again became a military position, and its buildings fell into disrepair for a time. The three-storied pagoda, an Important Cultural Property, is the subject of a legend that Hideyoshi built it in a single night.
