History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, in Tenki 5 (1057) Minamoto no Yoriyoshi prayed here for victory in battle, and when, on his way back from Ōshū, he established a Hachiman shrine (today's Rokugō Jinja), he built a hall beside it to enshrine Amida Nyorai; this is said to be the temple's beginning. In the Edo period the temple served as the bettō (administering temple) of the Hachiman shrine, and the present main hall was completed and dedicated in Shōwa 55.
