Principal object of worship: Jūichimen Kanzeon Bosatsu (Ueki Kannon)

History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in Suiko 14 (606) at the request (chokugan) of Prince Shōtoku, and it is said to be called the Ueki Kannon because the prince carved a Jūichimen Kannon into a great living cedar in the mountains. In Genki 4 (1573) the whole mountain was burned in Oda Nobunaga's attack, but the principal image escaped harm, and the main hall and other buildings were rebuilt in Keian 3 (1650).
