History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Taihō 1 (701) 温泉山 Manmyō-ji was opened in Unzen at the wish of Emperor Monmu, with Gyōki regarded as its founder. After losing its buildings in the Shimabara Rebellion, it was restored as Ichijō-in in Kan'ei 17, and with the anti-Buddhist movement of Meiji 2 its main temple was moved to the present Minamikushiyama.
