History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, a shrine to the kami of epidemics stood here even before the founding of the Heian capital. In Shōryaku 5 (994) the Murasakino Goryōe was held to pray for the end of an epidemic, and the shrine regards as its founding the naming of Imamiya-sha together with a new sanctuary in Chōhō 3 (1001). In the Edo period its festival was revived with the support of Keishōin, who came from Nishijin.
