History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, although the details of its founding are unknown, it is said to be one of the eight Hachiman shrines (Hassha Hachiman) built in Dōgo by the monk Gyōkyō in the reign of Emperor Seiwa, on the site of a temporary palace associated with Empress Jingū and Emperor Chūai. In the Kenmu era the Kōno clan moved it to its present site, and the present buildings were rebuilt in Kanbun 7 (1667) by Matsudaira Sadanaga, lord of the Matsuyama domain, in thanks for success in an archery contest. They are in the hachiman-zukuri style, modeled on Iwashimizu Hachimangū.
