History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, Sarutahiko Ōkami, who guided the descent of the heavenly grandson, returned to the upper reaches of the Isuzu River in Ise and, with this land as his base, worked to develop the land. His descendant Ōta no Mikoto is said to have recommended the land of Uji when Yamatohime no Mikoto was traveling, leading to the building of the Kōtai Jingū, and the Ujitoko family has continued to enshrine its ancestral kami, Sarutahiko Ōkami, within its residence. In front of the worship hall is the direction stone of the old shrine site (kodenchi), where the seat of the kami stood until the construction of Shōwa 11.
