History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun in Wadō 1 (708) when 恵命 and 東照, priests from Nara, came here bearing a stupa of King Ashoka and built a thatched hermitage. Originally called Sekitō-ji (石塔寺), it is said to have been renamed Ishidō-ji at the end of the Muromachi period after Ishidōmaru, the childhood name of Ashikaga Yoriuji. The main hall was built in Eishō 10 (1513).
