History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was founded in Jinki 5 (728) by Ochi Tamazumi, a powerful local figure of Iyo, by order of Emperor Shōmu, and in the following year Gyōki performed the eye-opening of the principal image. It was originally called Anyō-ji, but it is said to have been renamed Ishite-ji after it received a stone held in the hand of a child said to be the rebirth of Emon Saburō.
