History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in the 2nd year of Emperor Tenmu (673) the monk Jikun built a Senju Kannon hall and opened a Kannon sacred site, and in the Nara period Dōchū, a leading disciple of Ganjin, is said to have founded the temple. In the Kamakura period it was revered by Minamoto no Yoritomo and flourished, with many monks' lodgings standing side by side, but it was burned in attacks during the Sengoku period and declined.
