History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was a temple founded at the wish of Empress Genshō and one of the sub-temples of Gangō-ji, and it is also said to have been founded by 朝野魚養, eldest son of Kibi no Makibi. In the medieval period it lost many of its treasures in wars, but at the beginning of the Edo period its halls were repaired under the patronage of the Tokugawa family. The main hall, south gate, stone Buddha niche and other structures still keep their original form.
