History and things to know
According to the official history of the shrine, the date of its founding is not clear; based on old records of the Kii no Kuni no Miyatsuko family, it is said to have begun when, at the time of Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, Amenomichine no Mikoto landed at Kada Bay and enshrined Amaterasu Ōmikami. In the Kagen era the jitō (land steward) 日野光福 enshrined the three Kasuga kami, his ancestral kami, and called it "Kasuga-sha", and in the Tenshō era Kuwayama Shigeharu is said to have moved it to its present site. The munafuda of Keichō 1 (1596) proves that large-scale construction of the buildings was carried out.
