History and things to know

According to temple tradition, an image of Kannon drifted ashore in the temple grounds, which were once an inlet, and drew devotion as the “Kaki no Kannon.” It was originally a Shingon or Tendai temple, and in Ōei 10 (1403) it invited the priest 利山義聰 as its first patriarch and became a Sōtō temple. The principal image is thought to date from the late Heian period; it is a cultural property designated by Aichi Prefecture and is now a hidden buddha.
