History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, in Kōnin 3 (812), Ato no Ōtari, Kūkai's uncle, built the shrine buildings and welcomed the four Kasuga kami to be enshrined alongside. A munafuda (ridge tag) found during repairs in the Taishō period showed that the main sanctuary, a three-bay nagare-zukuri building with a cypress-bark roof, was rebuilt in Kenpō 7 (1219); it is regarded as the oldest nagare-zukuri shrine building whose date of construction is known, and it was designated a National Treasure in Shōwa 30. The worship hall burned in a fire in Shōwa 2, but the main sanctuary was saved.
