History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it began in Keian 4 (1651), when a residence at Ushijima in Honjo, Edo, was converted into a temple with the nun 清薫 as its head and named 清薫寺; it is said to have later been renamed Kannō-ji through a connection with Keishōin. When it was struck by the Great Kantō Earthquake in Taishō 12, the head priest escaped carrying the principal image and other objects on his back, and the temple was afterwards re-established in Kamiuma.
