History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated when Empress Jingū held up a sacred mirror on the shore of Matsura and worshipped the three Sumiyoshi kami. In Tenpyō Shōhō 7 the local lord 神田宗次 obtained a sacred mirror from the sea and was granted the title "Karatsu Daimyōjin," and in Keichō 7, when the Terazawa clan built Karatsu Castle, they are said to have fixed the present shrine grounds.
