History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Enryaku 17 (798) a statue of Jūichimen Kannon made by Ōguchi Dairyō of Aizu would not move once it reached Tanigumi, and he built a hall together with the holy man 豊然 and enshrined it there; this is said to be the beginning. Because oil that welled up from a cave was used for the lamps, the temple received the mountain name "Tanigumisan" from Emperor Daigo, and in Tengyō 7 (944) it became a temple of imperial prayer (chokuganji) of Emperor Suzaku. It is said that after losing its halls in war, it was restored in Bunmei 11 (1479).
