History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, it began when people who had moved here from Izumo by way of Noto built a small shrine to the kami of Keta; in Yōrō 1 (717), at the request of Empress Genshō, a divided spirit was welcomed from Noto and the shrine was revived, becoming the sōja (combined shrine) of Etchū Province and later its ichinomiya. After being burned in the fighting of Kiso Yoshinaka and the Uesugi clan, the main sanctuary was rebuilt in the Eiroku era; it is a three-bay nagare-zukuri building with a kokera (wood shingle) roof and is designated an Important Cultural Property of the nation.
