History and things to know

According to the guide of the Association of Shinto Shrines, it was anciently called Zaō Gongen, and it is said to have begun when En no Ozunu brought Zaō Gongen from Yoshino in Hakuhō 9 and built a hall. Legends of Jikaku Daishi remain at Chōkai Jinja, which is enshrined with it, and the bugaku dance handed down here is still performed as the Ennen Chōkurairo Mai.
