History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, in Tenpyō Shōhō 2 (750) an old man who loved white chrysanthemums named himself Ame no Futodama no Mikoto and caused clear water to spring forth, and villagers who received a letter in the hand of Empress Kōken built a shrine building. After burning in the Ōnin War it was restored, and the present shrine building was completed in Kaei 1 (1848). The Noh play “Kinsatsu,” said to be by Kan'ami, takes this founding legend as its subject.
