History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began in the 40th year of Emperor Keikō, when Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, on his eastern campaign, stopped at Ōtsuka Hill and worshipped Fuji. In Enryaku 7 (788) shrine buildings were built north of Ōtsuka Hill and Sengen no Ōkami was moved there; this is the present shrine site. The main sanctuary was built in Genna 1 (1615) and, together with the East Shrine main sanctuary and the West Shrine main sanctuary, is a nationally Important Cultural Property.
